Find out how to make sure our overhead scanners properly scan your labels

  1. Frequently encountered problems

By default, the labels of your parcels are scanned by our automated overhead scanners:

These scanners are smart, but not perfect. There are various scenarios where they’re unable to read the barcode and human intervention is needed, which can cause delays in the deliveries. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind to make sure the overhead scanners can scan your label (names and account numbers were hidden for privacy purposes)

    • Make sure you print your labels in A6 format
Labels printed in a smaller or bigger format will have a distorted barcodes and thus not be scannable.
    • Avoid sticking the label on creases or opening slits of the box
It can dent the barcode, making it unreadable. Instead, just stick it to one of the flat, smooth surfaces of the box.
    • Avoid crumpling and folding in the label.
This can indeed hide parts of the black and white stripes, rendering the barcode useless.
    • Do not cover the label with anything
Be aware that ribbons or parts of the box’s lid can accidentally cover up the label, rendering the barcode partially invisible.
    • Avoid putting the labels in plastic pouches or other obscuring envelopes
Unfortunately, their reflective surface can confuse the overhead scanners or simply make the barcode hard to heard, as shown below. We advise simply using printable stickers.
    • Be mindful of the required print quality
The labels below are examples of poor print quality. The first label was done on a printer type that is unable to print proper barcodes. It prints them blurred and too thick. The second picture shows a partially invisible barcode which is usually due to the print head that needs cleaning or needs replacing. If you need advice on what type of printer to use, please contact the DPD IT Department or your Sales Representative.
    • For Tyres specifically, stick the label to the border
Tyres are usually given to us packaged in plastic foil. However, the middle area, since it’s open, is more prone to tearing. If you stick your label there, there’s thus a bigger chance that it tears with the plastic. Therefor we advice to stick the label more to the sides if possible.
    • It’s advised to stick the label to the largest surface of your parcel
There’s a better chance the overhead scanners will detect the label if it’s stuck to the largest side of the box.
    • Make sure the label isn’t stuck on a corner.
The overhead scanner is unable to read barcodes that are partially folded to another side, even if it’s only a small portion
